Infrared and UV-A technology for commercial growing

Commercial growers have known for years that the light spectrum a plant receives shapes everything from stem length to leaf colour to flavour compound development. What's changed is how precisely that spectrum can now be controlled — and how much commercial advantage there is in controlling it well.

 

The challenge for UK growers

Natural daylight in the UK is inconsistent and, for large parts of the year, simply insufficient for the growth rates a commercial operation needs. Vertical farms and controlled-environment growers need supplemental lighting that's targeted to the plant's actual requirements — not a blanket white light that wastes energy on wavelengths the plant barely uses.

 

How we solve it

Far-red and infrared wavelengths influence stem elongation, flowering timing and canopy structure — used well, they let growers shape plant architecture rather than just add light. UV-A supplementation is increasingly used to boost secondary metabolite production, improving flavour, colour and nutritional density in leafy greens, herbs and fruiting crops. Both technologies are added as a targeted supplement to existing LED grow setups, not a wholesale lighting replacement.
