UV-C Water Disinfection for Aquaculture & Fish Farms

Aquaculture and Fish Farming

Every litre of water circulating through a modern recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) is treated, monitored and re-treated to keep pathogens out of a closed loop where an outbreak has nowhere to go but through the whole stock.

The water in a fish farm is treated more carefully than you'd think

UV-C light is one of the main reasons that water stays safe, and it's a technology most people outside the industry have never heard mentioned in the same sentence as fish.

The challenge for RAS operators in water treatment for aquaculture

RAS depends on continuous water treatment to stop bacterial, viral and parasitic pathogens spreading through a closed-loop system. A single contamination event in a recirculating system can affect an entire stock. Traditional chemical treatments such as formalin and chloramine-T are increasingly restricted under UK and EU veterinary medicine regulation, and even where still permitted, they introduce residue and handling risk that most operators would rather design out.

How UV-C is used for water treatment disinfection

UV-C water disinfection at 253.7nm is the established chemical-free solution for RAS water treatment. It inactivates bacteria, viruses and parasites by disrupting their DNA directly which means there is no chemical residue, no handling risk, no withdrawal period. It's a genuinely drop-in replacement for chemical dosing in most system designs.

We supply UV-C lamps compatible with the most widely deployed RAS UV reactor systems in UK and EU aquaculture — which matters more than it sounds, because a mismatched replacement lamp is one of the most common causes of under-treated water in an ageing reactor. If you're not sure which lamp your reactor takes, that's exactly what our team is for.
